What this tool does
Makes addition practice sheets for Reception through Year 3. Three formats: horizontal (12 + 5 = ___), vertical (stacked with an answer line, which is what teaches place value), and missing-number (one term blanked out, which bridges into subtraction). You control the digits in each number, the largest answer allowed, and whether carrying is permitted — turning carrying off keeps every column under ten, which is what children need before they meet regrouping. Problems are generated from a seed, so the sheet never changes underneath you; press New problems when you actually want a different set. The PDF has the pupil pages first and the matching answer pages second. If the settings are too tight to make as many distinct problems as you asked for, the tool says so rather than quietly repeating them.
How to use it
- 1Pick the format
Horizontal for children who have not met the vertical layout yet. Vertical once they are working on place value. Missing-number when they are ready to reason about the relationship.
- 2Set the difficulty
Choose the digits in each number and the largest answer. Switch carrying off until they are ready for it — that is the single biggest lever on how hard the sheet is.
- 3Print the set
Pupil pages first, then answers. Print at Actual size / 100% so nothing is scaled.
FAQ
- What does turning carrying off actually do?
- Every column adds to less than ten, so no regrouping is needed. That is the stage before children are taught carrying, and mixing the two too early is a common reason a child stalls.
- Why does my sheet stay the same when I change settings?
- The problems come from a seed, so the page cannot change underneath you. Press New problems to get a different set — that changes the seed.
- Can I get fewer problems than I asked for?
- Yes, if the settings are too tight to make that many distinct ones. The tool tells you rather than repeating problems — raise the largest answer, allow carrying, or use more digits.
- Are 3 + 5 and 5 + 3 counted as the same problem?
- Yes. They are the same fact, so only one of them appears on a sheet.
- Is there a subtraction version?
- Not yet. The missing-number format covers some of the same ground, since finding a missing addend is the idea subtraction rests on.
