Handwriting worksheet generator
Type your own words, pick the style your school teaches, print. Trace, copy or write.
What this tool does
Makes handwriting practice sheets from any text you type: this week's spelling words, a sentence from your class book, the alphabet, number words. Each line you type becomes one practice block on dotted thirds or four-line ruling. Choose how much help each block gives: Trace prints every row in light grey; Trace + write prints one grey row followed by empty rows; Copy prints one dark model row for children who are ready to copy rather than trace. The letters come from the Playwrite family, which was designed from the handwriting models schools actually teach, so you can match the sheet to your classroom: US print or cursive, the five Australian state styles (NSW Foundation, Victorian, Queensland, South Australian and Tasmanian), and two UK styles. Letters can be shown unjoined, with the small exit strokes children learn first, or joined once they are ready for cursive. Long lines wrap onto the next row by whole words, a block never splits across two pages, and the preview is the exact sheet that prints.
How to use it
- 1Type or pick your text
One line per practice block. Use a preset (alphabet, a-z, 0-20, days of the week, a sentence) or paste your own list.
- 2Match your school's handwriting
Pick the letter style your school teaches, then decide whether the letters should join. Unjoined is the usual starting point; switch joining on for cursive practice.
- 3Choose the support and print
Trace for first attempts, Trace + write for most practice, Copy once they can manage on their own. Print at Actual size / 100% so the line height is exact.
FAQ
- Is this the official NSW (or VIC, QLD, SA, TAS) handwriting font?
- No. The letters come from Playwrite, an open-licence family designed by TypeTogether by studying the handwriting models taught in each country and state. They are modelled on those styles and are close enough for everyday practice, but they are not the departments' official fonts, and a few letters may differ in small details from your school's chart.
- Can it do cursive?
- Yes. Switch on Join the letters and every style joins its letters the way its model does. US cursive is always joined. For children who are not ready yet, leave joining off: the letters keep their exit strokes, which is the step before joining.
- How long can a line be?
- As long as you like. A line that does not fit the page width wraps onto the next row by whole words, and all of its rows stay together on one page. If a single block is taller than a whole page, the tool tells you instead of cutting it off.
- What size should the lines be?
- 1 inch for first attempts, 3/4 inch for Kindergarten and Grade 1, 5/8 inch for Grade 1 and 2, and 1/2 inch from Grade 2 for copy work. The letters resize with the line so the lowercase letters always sit in the middle zone.
- Is anything I type uploaded?
- No. The sheet is drawn in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere.
