What this tool does
Makes sight word practice sheets from the Dolch lists, or from your own word list. Each word gets a small group of ruled lines: the first one or two carry the word in light grey to trace over, the rest are left blank so the child writes it without a model. Tracing and independent writing on the same page is the point — a child who only ever traces is not forming the word from memory. Pick one Dolch level or combine several; the lists stack in order and duplicates are dropped. The Dolch list is 220 service words plus 95 nouns, split by level: 40 pre-primer, 52 primer, 41 for Grade 1, 46 for Grade 2, 41 for Grade 3. You can also ignore the lists entirely and type your own spelling words. Longer words are shrunk to fit rather than clipped, and the tool tells you when that happens.
How to use it

Tick one Dolch level or several. Or type your own spelling list, one word per line — that overrides the lists.
- 2Set how much help
Two lines per word with one traced is the usual starting point. Give struggling writers three lines with two traced; confident ones get one traced line and a blank one.
- 3Print the set
A full list spills onto as many pages as it needs. Print at Actual size / 100% so the ruling matches what you planned around.

- Which Dolch list should I start with?
- Pre-primer for children just starting to read, primer for most of kindergarten, then Grade 1 and up. Lists can be combined if a child is working across two levels.
- How many lines should each word get?
- Two — one traced, one blank — suits most children. More traced lines for a child who needs the model longer; fewer for one who is ready to write from memory.
- Why leave blank lines at all?
- Because tracing alone does not build recall. The blank line forces the child to produce the word without a model, which is the thing that makes it stick.
- Can I use my own spelling list?
- Yes. Type one word per line and that overrides the Dolch lists entirely.
- Is this the complete Dolch list?
- Yes — 220 service words and 95 nouns, cross-checked against several published versions so the level groupings match what teachers expect.
